State Machine Replication (SMR) is a replication method that improves fault tolerance of a general service. Geographical state machine replication (in short, geo-replication), which consists of replicas on multiple continents, has extraordinary resiliency against catastrophic disasters and can be easily realized by the development of public cloud services. Although the existing research pointed out that the performance of the geo-replication has a significant influence on a combination of regions where the replicas are placed, it is unknown which region combination is the best. In this paper, we propose two region selection methods that output the best region combination based on client locations and resiliency which an administrator want to implement. Finally, we deploy geo-replications on a representative public cloud service, i.e., Amazon Web Services, and evaluate the two proposed region selection methods. |
