Coherence Length Extension Effect of Swept Light Source by Constant Output Power Control

(in English) Swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) is a technique to capture tomographic images of moving objects at high speed with high resolution of several 10 µm level. Since coherence length of a light source used in the SS-OCT is proportional to the observable depth, it is desirable that the coherence length is long. However, since the wavelength shifts before gain of a gain medium , which is a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), used in the light source is saturated due to laser oscillation while the light source changes in wavelength, it is difficult to obtain the effect of narrowing the oscillation linewidth due to gain saturation. In order to the problem, by maintaining the laser threshold at all wavelengths during the wavelength sweep, it is assumed that the wavelength band where the gain exceed the loss can be narrowed even if the gain saturation does not occur. And as a method of maintain the laser threshold, we attempted a method for controlling the laser output power constant to control the output power to around the threshold power. As a result, it was confirmed that the coherence length increase as the laser output power became smaller, and it was also confirmed that the coherence length was extended as compare with the case without power control.
