[Invited Talk] Epsilon iron oxide: from synthesis to magnetic recording applications -- Novel functional metal oxide material from abundant elements --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Epsilon iron oxide (ε-Fe2O3) is one of the polymorphs of Fe2O3, which exhibits a coercive field of 25 kOe, the largest value among metal oxide magnets. Epsilon iron oxide maintains its magnetic ordering even below the particle size of 10 nm, with a superparamagnetic limit of 7.5 nm. This is the smallest value among hard ferrites. From such magnetic feature, epsilon iron oxide is expected as a next-generation magnetic material for magnetic tapes, whose demand is increasing as an archiving medium in the big-data era. In this paper, the crystal structure, magnetic properties, and applications towards magnetic tape media will be introduced.
