Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We compared two methods of learning sequential button-press tasks—All-back and Zero-back methods—to explore the mechanism of learning a procedure while repeating the same operation of information devices. Participants were required to acquire a button-press sequence consisting of five sets of four lighted button presses in a 4×4 button-array, with trial and error. We compared the efficiency of learning using the All-back method, wherein participants restarted from the first set when they made an error, and the Zero-back method, wherein they restarted from the first button of the current set. With the All-back method, fewer errors occurred during learning, but with the Zero-back method, the total number of button presses was lesser. Previous and present study findings suggest that efficiency depends on the grouping of the process.
