Nematic liquid crystals have high liquidity and are widely used in optical devices such as liquid crystal displays since their molecular orientations can be controlled easily by electric field.
In this report, we investigated a technique to control the molecular orientation of nematic liquid crystals using ultrasound and the application to
a variable focus lens. The ultrasound optical lens consists of a liquid crystal layer with the thickness of 50 μm and a PZT ring transducer. The optical lens changed the focal length and acted as a convex lens under ultrasound
excitation. The effects of material properties of liquid crystals (birefringence, viscosity, and dielectric anisotropy) on the optical characteristics of the lens were investigated. The lens using a liquid crystal with low viscosity can change the focal point with low frequency. |
