Virtual File: Wide Area Data Exchange Format Apart from Access Control and File Retrieval

(in English) The data exchange is important to promote the utilization of digital data. “Data exchange” means the state that users can easily find and access data owned by other users. However, the data exchange is not advanced at present. This is because the authentication/authorization and file retrieval are tightly integrated with the data exchange format, and these flexibility is poor. We propose the Virtual File (VF) as a wide area data exchange format. The VF is distributed as a proxy of real data. Users access real data via the VF. In the VF, the metadata for the data discovery, the authentication/authorization protocol and the Access Control List (ACL) URL for the authentication/authorization, and the file URLs for the file retrieval are described. The VF links the data discovery, authentication/authorization, and file retrieval while controlling them independently. The VF is not associated with a specific user; thus, it can be freely distributed to anyone, and the data exchange can be promoted. We implemented the VF platform and measured the overheads of the execution time. The average authentication overhead was 0.53 sec. The average authorization overhead was 0.11 sec. The average data processing overhead was 0.10 sec. These evaluations show the effectiveness of the system.
