Effects of Exposure Frequency on Syntactic Process in Oral Sentence Production of Japanese EFL Learners -- Evidence from Psycholinguistic Investigation --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The present study aims to examine how exposure frequency affects Japanese EFL learners’ (JEFLLs) oral sentence production during a syntactic priming experiment. In the first phase of the experiment (Bias phase), exposure frequency to either a double object (DO) construction or a prepositional object (PO) construction was manipulated so that the participants produced a certain proportion of DO and PO constructions. In the second phase (Priming phase), the participants produced either DO or PO constructions. Then in the third phase (Picture Description phase), the participants completed a picture description task. The results show that JEFLLs were not affected by exposure frequency to a dominant sentence construction, but they seem to be affected by the sentence constructions exposed immediately before target production instead. Further, the participants were likely to produce more complete sentences when they were exposed to sentence constructions previously. This suggests that exposure frequency leads to a reduction of cognitive load during conceptualization process in oral sentence production.
