Comprehension of underspecified iterative meaning in Japanese

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study examines the processing of sentences like "The athlete jumped for 20 minutes", which involve an iterative meaning that is morpho-syntactically absent yet well understood by comprehenders (vs. "jogged for 20 minutes" that involves no iteration) in Japanese. We cross two Verb Types, Punctual (e.g., jump) vs. Durative (e.g., jog), and two Intervals denoted by for-adverbials, Short (e.g., 10 minutes) vs. Long (e.g., 1 year), in a naturalness rating experiment and a self-paced reading experiment.
Ex: "The athlete [jumped/jogged] for [20 minutes/1 year] at the gym...."
In addition, we investigate the impact of individuals' autistic traits, measured by Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ), on real-time meaning comprehension.
Results show that sentence with underspecified iterative meaning, regardless of verb type, engendered additional processing cost, argued to reflect a search of lexical conceptual representation and context for the underspecified meaning. Also, sentence comprehension is subject to individuals' processing styles indexed by autistic traits: individuals with high AQ spent significantly longer times at the sentence-final region than those with low AQ, likely reflecting a propensity for deliberation or a difficulty in meaning integration.
