(in English) This study investigates wh-questions in child French. It conducted a corpus study of children’s and adult’s naturalistic speech data in the CHILDES database and reports that pourquoi ‘why’ occurs in fronted questions much more frequently than où ‘where’ both in children’s and adults’ utterances. We discuss the relevance of this difference between pourquoi and où to the Left Periphery Hypothesis that pourquoi is a high modifier base-generated in the left periphery of the sentence structure (Rizzi 1990).
