Soft error mitigation using CNN DAE for onboard digital payload

(in English) An onboard digital payload enables communication and observation satellites to improve operation flexibility by changing communication parameter settings with digital signal processing. In general, space grade digital devices are used for onboard digital processor so as to mitigate soft error caused by radiation effect. On the other hand, commercial grade devices achieve higher processing speed at a modest price than space grade devices even though less resilient, therefore it is expected to install in onboard digital payload utilizing a variety of soft error mitigation techniques. Conventionally, soft error can be mitigated utilizing TMR (Triple Modular Redundancy) and periodic refreshment. However these techniques increase circuit scale, also it is difficult to avoid burst error which caused during a refresh period. Therefore, this paper proposes novel error tolerance digital processing technique which restores distorted signals utilizing CNN DAE (Convolutional Neural Network De-noising Auto Encoder). In the proposal, CNN DAE learns a representation for a set of data by training the neural network to minimize signal noise, then the output is selected from restored signal or original signal appropriately to avoid representation error. As a result, the proposal can mitigate soft error continuously without conventional redundant circuit. The effectiveness of the proposal is verified through simulation results.
