We experimentally evaluated the impact of fast state of polarization (SOP) variations on the received Q-factor of 400 Gb/s signals. As options for 400 Gb/s deployments, we compared single-carrier polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) with dual-carrier PDM 8-QAM. While dual-carrier 8-QAM shows longer reach in OSNR limited transmission cases due to its larger Euclidean distance, 16-QAM shows better tolerance to rapid SOP variation in the presence of tight optical filtering in cascaded optical nodes. We also studied the difference between uniform and probabilistically shaped (PS) 16-QAM signals. PS-16-QAM shows larger tolerance of both random noises and higher SOP variation than uniform 16-QAM. |
