Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Evaluation of bone inflammation is very important for racehorses. The present mainstream of bone evaluation is X-ray techniques, which however are difficult to diagnose large animals. Therefore, development of safe and inexpensive quantitative ultrasound (QUS) techniques is expected. One of the QUS methods, the Axial Transmission (AT) technique, can evaluate the cortical bone in vivo. The AT technique mostly measures the First Arriving Signal (FAS) which is a leaky longitudinal wave from the bone surface. However, FAS velocity is highly dependent on the cortical bone thickness and the surface shape. Therefore, we next focused on the shear wave. At first, an equine bone with periostitis was modeled using High Resolution-peripheral Quantitative CT (HR-pQCT) data and wave velocities in the axial direction which were measured by the ultrasonic pulse technique in the MHz range. Sound propagation in the 3D heterogeneous and anisotropic model was simulated using the elastic finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The observed shear wave velocity was not strongly affected by the bone thickness and surface shape. These results show that the AT technique may be convenient for in vivo evaluation.
