Investigation of ultrasound emitter diameter and suppression of grating lobe of an airborne ultrasound phased array

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) There is a scanning laser source technique (SLS) for performing high-speed measurement by scanning a laser
excitation source two-dimensionally.
In this study, we aimed to realize an elastic wave source scanning method using high-intensity aerial ultrasonic waves as an
elastic wave source. As one of the methods, we have studied non-contact and non-destructive testing of solid materials by elastic wave source scanning method using Airborne Ultrasound Phased Array (AUPA).
Due to the structure of the AUPA, side lobes and grating lobes (GL) are generated in the radiated sound waves, and artifacts are generated during non-destructive testing. However, it can be suppressed by adjusting the placement conditions of the ultrasound emitter on the AUPA.
In this report, we investigated the sound wave radiation characteristics when the distance between ultrasound emitters was changed by using ultrasonic wave emitters (drive frequency:40kHz) with diameters of 8 mm and 10 mm, including the generated harmonic waves. As a result, it was confirmed that GL can be suppressed including harmonic sound waves when an ultrasound emitter with a diameter of 8 mm is used.
