In media art, such as live computer music performances and interactive installations, it's been about 20 years becoming common practice to not "play back" pre-recorded/prepared sound material, but to "generate" and output live sound by sampling it on the spot and applying real-time acoustic signal processing. If the composer herself/himself is the performer, she/he can control the timing of the acoustic fragment sampling in the work, so there is no problem. However, a method for smartly sampling the live sound of a commissioned performer has been a major challenge in algorithmic composition, while avoiding cutting off the beginning of the sound recording or recording extra silence at the beginning. This issue has always come up in the installation works produced by students, and experiments, prototypes, and investigations are continuing in the ongoing student works. In this presentation, I would like to discuss this important point for interactivity and live performance by introducing several case studies, including examples of my own performances and those of past student works. |
