Pre-operative Head CT and Pathological Image Registration using Normalized Cross-Correlation and Dice coefficient

(in English) The radiation therapy to oral cancer sometimes causes the osteoradionecrosis of jaws which is know as a refractory disease. In recent advances, the excision of necrotic bone by surgical operation is being considered as a effective treatment. The necrotic area is not easily distinguished in pre-operative images including 3D-CT and 3D-MRI. Therefore, in our study, we construct a system to correctly estimate the necrotic area in pre-operative 3D-CT using machine learning. The system requires accurate annotation of necrotic area, therefore we employ the post-operative pathological image of excised bone which is used for definitive diagnosis. This paper proposes a method to register the pre-operative CT to the post-operative pathological images to clarify their spatial relationship. We proposed pre- and post-operative CT images registration and post-operative CT and pathological image registration. Experimental results showed that the proposed method achieved 0.798 of normalized cross correlation and 0.694 of dice coefficient.
