A Study on Impact of User-side Fading Correlation on Multi-user Joint Transmit/Receive Diversity

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Multi-user joint transmit/receive diversity (JTRD) is able to perform multiuser multiplexing while achieving spatial diversity gain by utilizing spatially separated multiple antennas at transmitter and receiver. A set of transmit and receive diversity weight vectors associated with each user is a set of solutions of eigenvalue equations using the channel matrix between the transmitter and receiver. Although the base station has sufficient space to equip multiple antennas, each user has limited space and antenna separation may become close to each other, thereby experiencing correlated fading. So far, authors evaluated the link capacity achievable by multi-user JTRD in a uncorrelated Rayleigh fading environment. In this report, we will evaluate, by the Monte-Carlo numerical computation, the link capacity achievable by multi-user JTRD in a correlated Rayleigh fading environment. It is shown that as the fading correlation gets stronger, higher link capacity is achieved. This will lead to a new antenna design for mobile terminals.
