Acoustic characteristics of a face mask invented for the purpose of not impairing speech clarity

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Due to the epidemic of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), wearing a mask is required in daily life to prevent the infection, and it has become necessary to have a conversation while wearing the mask. Cloth, paper, urethane, etc. used as the material of the mask may suppress the vibration of the sound and absorb it, which may impair the clarity of the spoken voice when the mask is worn. Unclear voice not only interrupts smooth conversation by re-listening, but also increases the risk of infection by removing the mask and talking. In order to solve the above problems, a patent application has been filed for the invention of a "face mask clearly transmitting voice" that maintains the original function of the mask and does not impair the clarity of voice even when talking while wearing the mask. There was an opportunity to examine the speech clarity of sound passing through the "face mask clearly transmitting voice" in a TV program plan, and acoustic measurements of the sound passing through the "face mask clearly transmitting voice", a non-woven fabric mask and a face shield were performed. From the experiment results, it was shown that the face shield attenuates the components in the higher frequency range than about 2 kHz and both masks from 4 kHz to 5 kHz. It was also shown that the "face mask clearly transmitting voice" had a larger attenuation than the non-woven fabric mask, however, strengthened the components in the 3kHz to 4kHz band.
