Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, non-invasive stimulation of deep brain tissue has attracted much attention in the treatment of brain dysfunctions, such as cerebellar regions related to motor and sensory functions. The traditional methods for noninvasive brain stimulation, such as transcranial electrical stimulation and transcranial magnetic stimulation, can target deeper brain regions, whereas stimulating superficial regions at the same time. Recently, temporal interference (TI) stimulation has been proposed to enable stimulation of deeper brain regions selectively. TI generates a modulated envelope by superposing two slightly different kilohertz alternating currents that are injected through attached electrodes to the scalp. It is considered that neurostimulation occurs at the location of more modulation that can be adjusted by the stimulation parameters. Previous studies reported promising results in animal experiments, although application of TI to the human body has not been sufficiently discussed. In this paper, we used a realistic human head model to analyze the envelope modulation of electric fields TI in the cerebellum under various electrode conditions using TI. As a result, it was confirmed that the selection of the position of the electrodes (straight line) was better for the selectivity and suitable for changing the positions based on the current ratio. However, the depth of stimulation did not change significantly, suggesting the need for further investigation.
