Twisted Nematic Liquid crystal Display without Threshold Voltage

(in English) In a hybrid aligned nematic (HAN) cell, a liquid crystal (LC) is sandwiched between planer and homeotropic alignment surfaces. Moreover, a “twisted hybrid aligned (THA) orientation cell has been proposed. We have numerically analyzed LC director distributions between the strong polar anchoring of the planar surface and the weak polar anchoring of the homeotropic surface in the THA cell. When the polar anchoring of the homeotropic surface is lower than a critical one, the cell orientation shows a conventional TN orientation and we call this LC cell a quasi TN cell. The relationship between elastic constants (splay, twist and bend) of the liquid crystal and the critical anchoring strength is analyzed. A spontaneous twisting pitch length also affects to the critical anchoring. Electro-optical properties are also calculated. The transmittance can be switched from 100% to 1% by applying approximately 0.5 V (normally white mode). When the applied voltage is more than 1 V, it becomes 0.1% or less at 1 V or more.
