Magnetic Pulse Welding of Al/Cu Sheets Using 10-Turn Flat Coil Tomokatsu Aizawa (Tokyo Metropolitan College) R2021-44 EMD2021-12 |

This magnetic pulse welding can electrically connect Al sheet and Cu sheet at low temperature with high quality. Welding experiments are performed by flowing a pulse discharge current from a parallel-charge series-discharge capacitor bank through a high inductance 10-turn flat coil. The 10-turn coil is used to reduce the discharge current for welding. The coil consists of 10 coil plates made of high-strength, medium-conductivity copper alloy. Overlapping Al/Cu sheets with a gap are fixed on the insulated coil. The Al sheet near the coil is electromagnetically coupled to the coil. When the current flows through the coil, a high density magnetic flux is suddenly applied to the Al sheet. The resulting eddy currents are induced in the sheet and electromagnetic forces act on the sheet. This sheet collides with the Cu sheet at high speed, and both sheets are impact welded. The bank capacitance during series-discharge is 6μF and the rise time of the discharge current is about 5μs.. The parallel charging voltage, the total bank energy and the peak discharge current required for welding are 7.6 kV, 0.70 kJ and about 16 kA, respectively. |
