On Array Antenna Gain in Closely-Spaced Arrangement
Yoshio Karasawa AP2021-177
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Theoretically, the gain of the array antenna fed in-phase by the omnidirectional antenna elements will approach 1 as the element spacing is narrowed toward 0. On the other hand, as a transmitting antenna, if there is no coupling effect between elements, it seems that the gain does not change by the spacing, but that violates the energy conservation law. In the first half of this report, we discuss this point and state that the idea of array factor seems to be applicable even in the case of narrow spacing. In the latter half of this report, we will evaluate the maximum gain of the array antenna based on the weight optimization. The scheme controlling the feed weight to obtain the maximum gain has already been established as a theory, but the evaluation by a simple calculation formula was limited to the omnidirectional array. In this report, a simple calculation formula for the dipole array is also shown, and the difference in gain characteristics is clarified.
