[Invited Lecture] Expectations for Terahertz Radio

(in English) Beyond 5G/6G discussions have begun, and various white papers have expressed expectations for the utilization of the terahertz band (100 GHz to 10 THz), and many R&D results in compliance with IEEE802.15.3d, the world's first standard that achieves up to 100 Gbps using the 300 GHz band, have been presented. The number of publications of the current results is comparable to that of the millimeter wave band about 10 years ago.
In the WRC-19, the ITU-R has designated a total bandwidth of 137 GHz between 275 GHz and 450 GHz (275-296 GHz (21 GHz), 306-313 GHz (7 GHz), 318-333 GHz (15 GHz), 356-450 GHz (94 GHz)) for land mobile services (LMS) and Fixed Wireless Services (FS).
Japan's contribution to this work has been very significant. The range of 252-275 GHz already allocated to LMS and FS has been combined with the frequency band below 300 GHz, where practical circuits can be realized using Si-CMOS and GaN semiconductors, and the possibility of using the continuous 44 GHz band between 252-296 GHz for mobile communications, etc. has emerged.
Regulations for exposure to living organisms are also developed in the ICNILP for 2020 for the frequency range below 300GHz. Since a continuous bandwidth of 10 GHz to several tens of GHz can be utilized, extremely high-speed and large-capacity wireless communications of 100 Gbps to 1 Tbps can be realized, and use cases in which large amounts of raw data are transmitted and received uncompressed without concern for the capacity of the radio section can also be realized. In this respect, competition for R&D has begun, and this is an area in which Japan should focus its efforts even more than before.
