A study on SNR Mismatch in Successive Cancellation Decoding of Polar Codes

(in English) Polar codes have been proven to asymptotically achieve the capacity of arbitrary binary discrete memoryless communication channel (B-DMC) at infinite code length, and have been adopted as error correcting codes for 5G communication systems. In polar codes, the reliability of each index is different due to the phenomenon called channel polarization. In order to make use of highly reliable indices, the codes are designed according to the signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) of the assumed communication channel. In addition, the SNR of the communication channel is used as a parameter to calculate the likelihood of the received signal in the successive cancellation~(SC) decoding, which is known as a low-complexity but capacity-approaching decoding method. Therefore, the estimation of the channel SNR should be necessary. However, the performance degradation caused by the mismatch of SNR has not been well investigated. In this work, we evaluate the effect of the SNR mismatch on the performance of polar codes based on computer simulations, and investigate the accuracy required for SNR estimation.
