A 5.2GHz-Band Reflection-Type Retrodirective Array Using Butler Matrix with Broadside Couplers

(in English) In backscatter system, increasing the gain of the tag antennas is an important task for extending the communication range.
Since the arrival direction of a radio wave to the tag are irregular, the antenna for backscatter system that can reflect to the arrival direction (retrodirectivity) is required for increasing the gain.
In this paper, we use a reflection-type retrodirective array (RDA) aiming to backscatter communication system application. A strip line Butler Matrix circuit with broadside 3,dB couplers is introduced. As the result, the phase conjugate circuit size becomes much smaller than 4 element patch array antenna.
Here, we show the design of the proposed RDA and a new measurement setup that can measure the re-radiation pattern of the RDA when the radio wave is coming from arbitrary arrival direction.
By using this setup, the measured re-radiation patterns within the range of ±$20^circ$ from front direction of the antenna were agreed with simulation.
This RDA can use as a radio equipment for backscatter system by switching terminals of the circuit simultaneously.
