[Encouragement Talk] Study on Error Correction in IP network to Compensate for Rain Attenuation in 21-GHz band Satellite Broadcasting

(in English) We are developing a diverse reception system (DRS) which compensates for the rain attenuation in 21-GHz band by recovering satellite signals in a rainy area where it occasionally cannot be received correctly with signals from a sunny area via a best-effort (BE) - IP network. While the widespread BE-IP network makes it easy to deploy the DRS because of cost advantage, the packet loss occurring in the IP network should be considered. We considered to apply the error-correction code in satellite broadcasting to packet loss in IP network. Moreover, considering an advantage of using common error-correction code for both channels, we proposed a technique, namely “log-likelihood ratio (LLR) sharing”, which improves service availability of DRS by sharing LLRs of bits received via a satellite channel and an IP network.
In this report, we give an overview of DRS, and describe the structure of forward error correction encoder and decoder and its error-correction performance for an IP network. In addition, the mechanism of LLR sharing is explained and its effectiveness are demonstrated through computer simulation.
