Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Free-space optical communication is expected to be a fundamental technology for realizing Beyond 5G/6G. Since laser light is more directional than radio waves, it is suitable for compact, lightweight, and power-saving applications, and it is not constrained by the tight frequency bandwidth of radio waves. These characteristics of optical communications fit well with the Beyond 5G/6G requirements of high speed, high capacity, and low power consumption. This paper describes the compact optical communication system being researched and developed by Sony Computer Science Laboratories, the optical communication experiments using this system, standardization activities, and future prospects.
