Queue read control method that guarantees jitter on the order of µs

(in English) In this paper, we propose a per-packet queue read control method to reduce latency and jitter in order to achieve μs-class delay jitter in end-to-end wide area networks. Recently, applications requiring low latency, low jitter, and low packet loss transmission, such as virtual reality communications, have become very important. Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) has been proposed to realize applications requiring low latency and low jitter transmission. Traffic Shaper (ATS) is being considered as a technique to achieve low latency and low jitter in TSN. However, TAS has very strict constraints on inter-node synchronization, and it is quite impractical to meet these constraints in wide area networks. On the other hand, ATS does not require inter-node synchronization, making it highly applicable to wide area networks. However, since control is performed on a flow-by-flow basis, packets that do not satisfy the desired QoS may be generated. Therefore, a method is proposed to satisfy QoS by providing a per-packet queue read control method. This paper proposes a formulation for estimating the jitter generated when using this method, and quantitatively evaluates how many high-priority flows can be accommodated in the network compared to ATS by simulating flow admission control. We also implemented the proposed method using the Click Modular Router and measured actual jitter values. Finally, we evaluate how much delay and jitter can be reduced compared to an ATS and assess its applicability to wide area networks.
