A Study of Multilayer Edge Computing for Optimizing Cooperative Driving in Intelligent Transport Systems

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, attention has focused on advanced road transportation systems such as "remote driving technology" and "cooperative driving technology" that enable multiple vehicles to pass safely, smoothly, and without delay at intersections and merging points in urban areas by acquiring, coordinating, and controlling their positions through ultra-low latency communications. In the cooperative driving technology, the increase in the amount of information collected at the control point enables optimal control, but at the same time, there is a trade-off problem of increasing delays. Since cloud-based vehicle control and single-layer MEC-based vehicle control cannot solve this problem, two-layer ES (edge server) control has been proposed. However, when MEC is applied to a large-scale traffic network such as that used in ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems), which is one of the elements for future smart cities, it is necessary to collect information from many points and separate control. Therefore, there was a possibility that a multi-layer ES with more than two layers would be required in the future, but the structure has not yet been discussed.
In this study, we propose to consider the structure and number of layers of a multi-layer ES to optimize the cooperative driving control using the Metropolitan Expressway as a use case. In this paper, as an example of overall optimization in cooperative driving control, we use the degree of reduction in average travel time by giving route instructions to vehicles to avoid driving in congested areas and by eliminating the congestion itself as an evaluation index. The simulation results show that the control using the multilayer ES (information update cycle: 20 s, 3 layers) can reduce the average travel time per vehicle by 12.95 % compared to the static route control and by 9.07 % compared to the control using NEXCO's information (update cycle: 5 m, 2 layers ES).
