In general, users of virtual reality (VR) are suddenly put on the home screen of a VR platform such as SteamVR when they put on a head-mounted display (HMD). In many cases, the user is suddenly switched to the desired VR content after a transition effect such as a blackout. However, such a sudden change in visibility hinders a high sense of realism in VR. On the other hand, it is known that spontaneous body movements in VR and their feedback can improve the user experience, such as the sense of presence. In this study, we propose a transition method from a real environment to a VR environment using video see-through augmented reality (AR) and physical doors, with the aim of improving the user experience. The proposed method achieves a smooth transition by opening a door in the real environment and passing through the door toward the destination VR environment. This paper describes the implementation of the proposed method, an example of its operation, and future prospects. |
