We are focusing on the provision of communication areas from the sky by satellites and High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPSs) to realize "extreme coverage extension" to any location including air, sea, and space. In particular, HAPSs flying in the stratosphere can form service areas in remote islands and mountainous areas without geographical restrictions, and can provide lower latency communications than satellites. On the other hand, the propagation delay is larger than that of the ground system, and processing delays caused by HAPSs and other devices are also added. Therefore, the system design must take these delays into account when implementing a network using HAPSs. In this paper, we simulate the transmission and processing delays in a HAPSs network by using a delay generator. By connecting the delay generator between a 5G wireless base station and a core network (CN), we verify the transmission characteristics between the CN and user equipment (UE). The experimental results also show that under the device environment used in this experiment, each-way delays of up to approximately 90 ms are acceptable, and that communication performance is sufficient for the amount of delay expected in a real-world environment. |
