All-optical PAM4 to QPSK and 16QAM Conversions Using Si-rich Nitride Waveguides

(in English) All-optical modulation format conversion, which is performed only in the optical domain, has been proposed as a promising technique for efficiently connecting networks with different modulation formats. For inter-data center communication, all-optical PAM4/QPSK and PAM4/16QAM conversions using highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) have been proposed. However, HNLF is not applicable to photonic integrated circuits (PICs). In this paper, we propose all-optical PAM4/QPSK and PAM4/16QAM conversions using optically integrated silicon-rich nitride (SRN) waveguides, which can be fabricated cost-effectively on PICs. Subsequently, we demonstrate successful modulation format conversions to 50-Gbps-class QPSK and 100-Gbps-class 16QAM signals by numerical simulation.
