Study of duration of school closure using the COVID-19 infection simulation by MAS

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) COVID-19 is still raging in Japan, and the number of new cases per day exceeded 260,000 in August 2022. COVID-19 has had variant strains such as the Alpha, the Beta and the Omicron variants, and each variant shows differences in disease status and infectivity. By using Multi-Agent-Simulation (MAS) which can model social phenomena through the interaction of multiple agents, we have developed an SEIARD infection simulation model which takes into account the agents’ daily behavior. The proposed model can manipulate parameters such as incubation period, lethality rate and infection probability, and can simulate the infection situation in a city on each variant strain. The purpose of this study is to discuss strategies of school closure under the case of epidemic of the Omicron variant which has a high susceptibility for children, by using our proposed model. The results showed that COVID-19 infection could be better controlled if school closure was introduced at a time when the number of infected patients was small.
