Modeling the information diffusion process on networks is an important issue for analyzing information diffusion patterns and controlling the spread of hoaxes in social networks, and various information diffusion models have been proposed.
Most of the existing models assume that each user spreads information uniformly, however, in reality, some users spread information easily while others do not.
Furthermore, due to homophily, there is spatial non-uniformity in the ease with which users spread information.
In other words, neighbors of users who spread information easily (hardly) tend to spread information easily (hardly) as well.
In this paper, we investigate the effect of homophily on information diffusion.
Specifically, we consider information diffusion on a network with a mixture of nodes that spread information easily and hardly, and analyze theoretically and experimentally how the spatial non-uniformity of ease of diffusion affects the diffusion rate and speed of information diffusion.
The analysis shows that homophily promotes local diffusion and inhibits global diffusion on networks with strongly separated communities. |
