The wireless power transmission technology using microwave frequency is attractive for rapidly spreading IoT devices such as the tracker, the beacon, and the sensor. In March 2022, the microwave WPT have institutionalized in Radio Act in Japan, and it can be used legally under some regulations. This lecture includes an overview, elemental techniques, and the applications of the microwave WPT system Enesphere. The Enesphere is consisted of a transmitter transmitting 1W 920MHz microwave and power receiver terminals powered by wireless power. The Radio Act regulates the transmitting power; hence hard to antenna directivity control such as beamforming. Therefore, the received power at the receiving terminal is quite small. The receiving terminal includes the high-efficiency small antenna, or diversity configuration and power reflect circuit that re-radiates surplus energy into space. In the 920MHz band, the multi-pass fading effect and coupling between receiving antennas are strong; hence the above antenna techniques are important. In the rectifier circuit, the fast MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) enables efficient power conversion while varied input power and the rechargeable battery can be charged from surplus energy. In addition, a developing technology using multiple transmit antenna can transmit higher power safely is also mentioned. |
