The outphasing amplifier (OPA) has been attracting attention as an amplifier that achieves high efficiency from saturated output to high back-off output. Moreover, mixed mode outphasing amplifiers (MOPA), which change amplitude as well as phase below high back-off, are focused on. Generally, an outphasing amplifier consists of two amplifiers and a non-isolated Chireix power combiner. Matching circuit design for MOPA requires a highly challenging optimization process due to the mutual interference of the four complicated matching conditions at the output ports of the two amplifiers under two power level conditions. In this paper, MOPA design is simplified by deriving an analytical solution for simultaneous matching with the optimum load under two power conditions, using the invariants of a lossless matching circuit. Next, a matching circuit, using offset lines, was introduced to enable independent adjustment of the four matching conditions. A result of the simulation and measurement, it was confirmed that the power efficiency agreed within about 1% and output power and efficiency of MOPA were 46dBm and 70%, respectively. |
