[Invited Talk] Increasing Efficiency of Power Amplifiers for Microwave Power Transfer by PA- Antenna Co-design

(in English) The efficiency is important in power amplifiers. For wireless communication applications which transfer signals, there are other important parameters such as linearity and bandwidth other than the efficiency, and they are usually in a trade-off relationship. On the other hand, the efficiency is the most important and need to be extremely high for energy transfer applications. In this presentation, the authors will introduce the technologies for improving the efficiency of power amplifiers for microwave power transfer. Power amplifiers generally use a matching circuit for the fundamental wave and a harmonic reflection circuit for high efficiency between the transistor and the next circuit block, but they have not a little loss. The authors have proposed the design methodology that minimizes these losses by directly connecting, without matching circuits, the power amplifier and the antenna which has built-in harmonic reflection function, thereby realizing highly efficient power amplifiers. This paper introduces this design technique and some other PA-antenna co-design methods.
