The authors are developing a "combined aerial and underwater drones" to address issues such as manpower shortages in water area infrastructure inspections and aquaculture farm monitoring. In this system, an aerial drone automatically flies with an underwater drone from land to the target water area, the underwater drone is controlled remotely from land to perform monitoring work, and after the work is completed, the two drones merge again and automatically fly back to the land base. To operate this system, it is essential that the underwater drone's position be known in real time at the land base, so an acoustic positioning system is implemented. The underwater drone is equipped with an ultrasonic transmitter (pinger) and an aerial drone is equipped with hydrophones to measure the position of the underwater drone using the SSBL (Super Short Base Line) method. This paper introduces the acoustic positioning method for our combined aerial and underwater drones, as well as the basic study of an improved method for future deployment. |
