Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) When we play action video games of third-person perspective, we often observe occlusion, where obstacles enter spaces between a user-operated avatar and a camera that becomes the user's viewpoint. The occlusion becomes causes to decrease the visibility and the operability of the action video games, and the countermeasures are required to prevent it. The main countermeasures proposed so far are the following two processing: to silhouette the avatar, and to make obstacles semi-transparent during occluding. However, it is not fully clear which is better quantitatively. In this study, we conducted a usability testing for the action video games based on subjective evaluation and log data analysis with the aim of clarifying the benefits of the conventional occlusion countermeasures. As a result, it was shown that the method of making obstacles semi-transparent significantly improved visibility, operability, and psychological satisfaction compared with the method of silhouetting the avatar, because it had the effect of reducing the amount of camera operation by approximately 14&.
