In this paper, we propose an iris image quality assessment method to quantify the influence of each type of image degradation on iris recognition. In iris recognition, the iris must be captured clearly and with high resolution in order to extract personal characteristics from the microscopic iris pattern. Due to the difficulty of capturing, the quality of the iris image is often degraded, and low-quality iris images reduce the recognition performance in the actual system. It is necessary not only to estimate the quality of the iris image but also to remove the degradation that impact to the recognition performance. We propose an iris image quality assessment method that can quantify the degradation score for each type of degradation, which represents the influence of degradation on iris recognition. The proposed method calculates a degradation score for each type of degradation considering the characteristics of the recognition engine by learning a linear regression model using data in which the intensity for each type of degradation is paired with the iris recognition score. The degradation scores can be used to estimate the type of degradation that causes quality degradation. Experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the equal error rate in iris recognition by removing low-quality images from the dataset. Furthermore, we show that the proposed method can identify the type of image degradation that causes iris image quality degradation to estimate the type of degradation that affects the engine. |
