An analysis on backbone structure of word co-occurrence networks

(in English) Complex networks observed in the real world contain strongly connected vertex pairs. A set of such vertex pairs and their connections in a network is sometimes called backbone of the network. The disparity filter has been proposed as one of the methods to extract these strongly connected vertex pairs from observed networks. The disparity filter estimates backbone structure by testing whether normalized weights of edges attached to a vertex follow a beta distribution. Using the disparity filter, we have investigated backbone structure of word co-occurrence networks generated from English novels, where vertices represent words, edges represent co-occurrence relationships, and weights of edges correspond to co-occurrence frequencies. The results show that the backbones of word co-occurrence networks might contain information about the author who wrote the novels from which the word co-occurrence networks were generated.
