In Beyond 5G / 6G, which is being researched and developed as the next-generation mobile communication system, non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) are attracting attention as part of the coverage expansion of wireless communication services.
At NTNs, drones are expected to be used not only for unmanned delivery services but also as temporary base stations, and as the latest transportation such as a flying car.
Efficient route planning for drones, stable communication, and deployment planning as a base station requires for estimation of the radio environment in the 3-dimensional space where drones fly.
Although radio propagation models based on empirical rules have been traditionally used for radio environment recognition, has a problem that they do not take into account information on surrounding structures and terrain.
In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the received power in the direction of altitude by combining 3D map information that records the geometry of terrain and structures, which has become readily available in recent years, with observations obtained from actual drone flights.
The proposed method divides the estimation area into a line-of-sight (LOS) range and a non-line-of-sight (NLOS) range, derives the estimation values for each range, and then integrates them to obtain the overall estimation values.
Furthermore, by using the proposed method with the measurement campaign results by actually flying drone with measurement equipment, it is demonstrated that the received power can be estimated more accurately than with conventional radio propagation models. |
