Transmission line dependence of equalizer design for multi-level modulation signals

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We have studied the design indexes of waveform compensation equalizers (CTLE circuits) used in receivers for four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signals. In particular, the design index in the previous study assumes the first-order low-pass filter as the waveform degradation. It is not clear that the applicability of the index to higher-order degradation. Therefore, we applied the proposed method to second- and third-order low-pass filters and compared the design results. By comparison of the design results and eye pattern waveforms, it is confirmed that the amount of peaking tended to become insufficient and the eye aperture narrowed as the waveform degradation factor became higher order degradation.
