A Study on Frequency Prism in Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces with Delay Elements over Terahertz Bands

(in English) The demand for high-speed communication with large amounts of data is increasing rapidly, but the mmWave spectrum is struggling to keep up. As a result, researchers are turning to terahertz (THz) communication as a potential solution. However, THz signals can be weakened by various factors, such as diffraction loss and high linearity. To combat this, researchers are investigating the use of intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) to improve the propagation paths of THz signals by reflecting them around obstacles and controlling their direction. However, beamforming using IRS phase control in THz can have lower beam width and coverage due to their high frequency and short wavelength. To extend the coverage of IRS, we propose using a technique called frequency prism, which distributes the beam direction for each multiplexed subcarrier such as OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing). This is accomplished by radiating radio waves with time-shift for each antenna element. However, this method does not apply to IRS since it only reflects incoming radio waves. Therefore, we suggest using a Delay Adjustable-IRS (DA-IRS) to reflect the incident wave after a certain wait time to realize the frequency prism. Finally, we evaluate the performance of our proposed system through simulation.
