Detection of Calcification Regions from Dental Panoramic Radiograph Based on Semantic Segmentation Using Transformers

(in English) Calcification regions, considered a sign of atherosclerosis, are sometimes observed in the carotid arteries in dental panoramic radiographs. For this reason, methods for automatically detecting calcification regions in dental panoramic radiographs have been proposed. In particular, an approach based on semantic segmentation using deep learning has been proposed, and its performance has been significantly improved. However, the accuracy of this method can still improve since the global information of the carotid artery location on a dental panoramic radiograph is not utilized. We propose the introduction of the Transformer, which has been attracting attention in image recognition, to incorporate global information. We also propose an introduction of a Masked Autoencoder, which pre-trains the Transformer part for utilizing healthy human data without calcification regions. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves detection accuracy.
