Feature Representation of Japanese Pitch Accent and its Perceptual Adequacy -- Fundamental Study for Application to Japanese Speech Education --
Ikuyo Masuda-Katsuse (Kindai Univ.) SP2023-3
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) For the purpose of application to Japanese speech education, pitch patterns were modeled by Sequential VAE to obtain a feature representation of pitch accent. In this model, pitch patterns are decomposed into time-invariant and time-variant features, with time-invariant representing accent and time-variant representing voice/unvoice at each time point. First, GMM regression of the time-invariant latent variables confirmed that the time-invariant latent variables represent accent features. Next, the pitch frequency of speech was transformed by reconstructing 49 different pitch patterns for each word by varying only the value of the time-invariant latent variable. Subjects rated the adequacy of the pitch patterns of the transformed speech. Compared to the distribution of accent features in the time-invariant latent space, the distribution of the rating averages tended to have relatively high values for accent types other than the teacher accent type.
