After the 1990s, there are some reports that ULF electromagnetic emissions were observed with seismic activities. To analyze the relation between earthquakes and ULF emissions, numerical electromagnetic simulation is important. Although the FDTD method is effective for modeling strongly inhomogeneous underground conductivity structure, the stability condition causes vast number of computation resources due to extremely small cell-size. Hence we apply the WLP-FDTD method, which is unconditionally stable, to the simulation of 3-D ULF emissions in the earth’s crust. To realize an absorbing boundary condition for extremely small analysis domains, we use nonuniform grids to extend distance to the perfectly matched layer. The developed simulation method shows excellent performance to analyze the propagation of the ULF waves in the earth’s crust. |
