The Stiefel manifold, say St(p,N), is the set of all N-by-p matrices whose column vectors are orthonormal. Optimization problems over St(p,N) arise in signal processing and machine learning applications, e.g., finding the best (low-dimensional) subspace in some sense and its orthonormal basis. However, it has not been easy to establish computationally efficient algorithms for optimization over St(p,N) due to its severe nonlinearity. In this talk, we introduce our proposed generalized Cayley transform, which parameterizes a dense subset of St(p,N) in terms of a vector space. By using the generalized Cayley transform and by apdaptively changing its parameterizable subset, we also present a reformulation of an optimization problem over St(p,N) into more tractable optimization problems defined over multiple vector spaces. With the reformulation, we illustrate a computationally efficient strategy for optimization over St(p,N). |
