Development of a Cloud-integrated Remote Drone System with AI and XR

(in English) Remote drones, which fly unmanned by remote control, are useful for rapid assessment of the situation at disaster sites. In this study, we developed a system in which multiple remote drones are linked via a 5G network and cloud computing to provide information on the situation to observers while flying, assuming an urban disaster. A state estimation AI was implemented on the cloud to recognize the state of people and smoke emissions at the disaster site based on sensor information mounted on the drones. We also developed an XR information presentation technology that transmits 4K images in all directions via 5G and overlays the information from the state estimation AI and the images on a HMD to enable efficient understanding of the situation at the site. Flight tests were conducted in a simulated urban area at the Fukushima Robot Test Field, and it was demonstrated that real-time status estimation and information presentation were possible from two drones.
