A Study on evaluation index for step counting of PDR

(in English) Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) is an alternative pedestrian location estimation method for indoor when GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) signals are not readily available. PDR is a method that calculates walking information such as the number of steps and direction of movement using sensor information in a smart device by a pedestrian. It is possible to calculate the amount of relative movement from the initial position. Due to the characteristics of relative position estimation, it is important to minimize the error in the calculated gait information because errors accumulate as the positioning time increases.
Among the components of PDR, step detection has been used in many previous studies as an evaluation index for the difference between the estimated and true values of the cumulative number of steps. However, we expect that all step time estimates be close to the true time because the PDR is the cumulative distance traveled per step and direction of travel. In this paper, we propose a new evaluation index focusing on the time of step detection. The step detection method is evaluated by setting up an interval from the true step time to determine if the detection time is correct or incorrect, and by applying the correctness of each step to a table based on a confusion matrix to determine the reproduction rate and goodness of fit.
