The selection of honorific o- and go- by Japanese-speaking children

(in English) In honorific speech, o- is used with Yamato Japanese (YJ) words and go- is used with Sino-Japanese (SJ) words. We investigate the patterns of honorific prefixation in child speech. In Experiment 1, children were asked to attach o- or go- to YJ-like and SJ-like nonce words, all of which were accented. The results showed no effects of the word type. In Experiment 2, we used the same design, except that the YJ-like stimuli were unaccented. The rate of go-selection was generally lower than that in Experiment 1 and was also relatively high in a SJ-like condition with voiced obstruents.
